Top tips for standing out on paper and in person
Making a great first impression when applying for a job is no longer confined to the CV and covering letter. Your first point of contact with a potential employer could now be on social media – for example, through LinkedIn. Even when you apply for a role in the traditional way, the employer may check out your Facebook profile or Google you before they decide whether to shortlist your application.
Here, we share our tips for making a great first impression on paper when applying for jobs and in person when attending an interview.
Top tips for candidates
Excellent service as usual! Wouldn’t use another agency – Howett Thorpe is the only agency that doesn’t harass me every other week!
Excellent service – this was a textbook exercise in how to recruit for a client properly.
Howett Thorpe listened to our requirement, sent exact candidates with an overview on each. We were not pushed into hiring someone that didn’t quite fit. We received a great service and are very happy – keep doing what you do as it works really well
I don’t normally use recruitment companies as I have had many bad experiences. However, Julie has provided an exceptional experience from start to finish. Professional, in-depth research on the candidate and our company to provide a high-quality candidate. Thank you very much, we will certainly be back & recommend you to others.
It was reassuring that Toby took the time to truly understand our requirements and recruited perfectly against these.
Julie was always available when needed and the timings were good. The candidates sent were suitable for our requirements. If I needed help with recruitment again, I would not hesitate to work with Howett Thorpe.
Sarah was fantastic, so thorough and paid great attention to detail. Sarah really made sure she understood the needs of our role and the type of person I needed to fit into the team. This was the best recruitment experience I’ve ever had!
Great service from Howett Thorpe! As a business we have used them on numerous occasions over the past few years. They are always responsive and understanding of our requirements, placing candidates that are a match both technically as well as culturally. Sam Mercer is professional, personable and consciously checks in post candidate placement to ensure the arrangement is working from both the employer and candidate’s perspective. Would highly recommend!
“Sam Mercer stepped in when we were struggling to fill an urgent vacancy directly. He listened and fully understood our requirement – his first recommendation was our perfect candidate. Will be going back to Sam again, a joy to work with.”
Howett Thorpe are my go-to for all finance roles. Your biggest selling point is not doing the hard sell and ensuring that the candidate is suited to the organisation and vice versa. I have been recruiting for decades now and Howett Thorpe is in my top three; I think that is quite impressive.
We have used Howett Thorpe for the past 3 years and received nothing but exceptional service. Julie understands the needs of the business, our requirements and meets our criteria every time.
Julie Mott has always just got us; she knows the type of person that works and that doesn’t. Julie is a very real individual, and I enjoy working with her when the opportunities arise.
100% – again another well-matched candidate. The whole accounts department now consists of HT candidates.
“Sam Mercer has worked hard at developing our relationship, knows how I like to be contacted and how not to put me under additional pressure with constant calls. Sam makes the relationship easy in addition to always finding a solution to my recruitment needs. He is at the top of the list when a recruitment need arises.”
Howett Thorpe clearly listened to and understood the requirements of the company. As a piece of process, I thought it went extremely well and was delivered by an efficient organisation which clearly possesses a human touch. No hesitation about using Howett Thorpe again.
